Assistance Dogs

Personalized support for every disability

General

All categories of assistance dogs trained by Os'mose receive a common base of about 15 months (walking on a leash, calm in all circumstances, retrieving, etc.); Then, according to their skills and qualities, they are specifically prepared for their future job:

Working methods

Clicker training is used for some foster dog training (leash walking / specific commands). It allows you to work in a calm environment, with acoustics that are always the same and unambiguous, and eliminates any parasitic gestures.

Assessment

The ASBL Os'mose is accredited by ADI (Assistance Dog International), the only organization authorized to certify the quality of the work carried out. This accreditation (renewable every 5 years) enables us to remain vigilant about the quality of our work, and to share our constantly evolving working methods with other associations.

Cost of the dog

€23,000 is needed for the training of an assistance dog for two years, but this is actually an investment of ten years of the assistance dog's life, as it is retired at this age. This cost was updated in 2022 due to inflation and the increase in energy prices. This sum includes the purchase of the puppy from breeders scrupulously selected by us, veterinary costs (vaccinations, sterilization, laxity tests, dysplasia x-rays, etc.), food, instructors' salaries and very high travel costs due to the special follow-up of both the foster families and the beneficiaries.

But the dog is given FREE of charge to the client. The essential criterion for obtaining a service dog is the desire for greater autonomy and a significant improvement in quality of life.

Criterion

The essential criterion for receiving an assistance dog is the desire for greater autonomy and a significant improvement in quality of life. From a technical standpoint, it is necessary to have a fenced garden and be able to attend classes at Os'mose twice a week for several months during the process of receiving the dog.
